How to Design a Facebook Profile and Cover Image

In this video, I will teach you how to properly design a Facebook Profile and Cover image using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

  • Facebook Profile Image Dimensions: Best to do it at 500 x 500 pixels
  • Facebook Cover Image Dimensions: 851 x 315 pixels

Tips on How to Design a Facebook Profile Image

  • If you are a business, I recommend just using your logo for the Facebook Profile Image.
  • Consider having a border.
  • Don’t go too close to the edges. Leave some breathing room.
  • If your branding allows it, have a variation of a circle.
  • If your branding allows it, invert the colours. For avatars and profile images, this makes the image really pop.

Designing this would depend on what you are actually selling or promoting. Are you an Author? a Business Establishment? a Storefront? a Designer or Photographer? Don’t confuse people. Just tell them what you are selling. Remember, you only have 851 x 315 pixels to sell your story. Use it wisely!

Below are some examples I threw together to show you.

If you are a service oriented storefront, don’t just have a shot of your exterior sign. Consider a grid format design with multiple images of what you are selling as well as a shot of the interior and exterior of your establishment. Especially if you are a spa! I cannot tell you how many times I did not go to a certain spa because there were no interior shots, just really low res pictures of lotions and hair products most likely grabbed off their supplier’s website. I want to see where I am going to experience my $90 massage! People want to see your place and not have to rummage through your photo gallery for hours trying to find interior shots.

Here is another example if you have a store front:

If you are a designer or photographer or someone in the creative services industry, include portfolio pieces of your work and a picture of yourself if you want. Usually, creative people don’t include their own photo.

If you are a professional business such as a law firm, real estate agent, or accountant, you know that  your face should be prominent as this builds trust with your clients. Have professional photos taken of you and perhaps you meeting with clients. If you have a product, like a book or ebook that accompanies it, then have a picture of YOU and the BOOK.
